Rotational grazing isn’t just better for animals — it’s better for the planet.

By moving our ruminants, lovingly referred to as our Flerd (flock of sheep and herd of cows), to fresh grass we mimic the natural herd behavior to move that promotes:

Soil health: Hooves break up the ground, manure fertilizes it.

This is the good farm stuff.

I protested incubating duck eggs, multiple times.
We don’t need anything else to care for or feed.
“But daddy, I want to hatch them and sell them.”
Oh. Well who am I to dampen a child’s entrepreneurial spirit?

So far two have hatched with more coming by morning we’re sure. But at this point I doubt she sells any, she’s smitten with them for sure and is thinking of names. We’ll see. But regardless, the joy she has had from this is worth all of it.

Like I said, this is the good farm stuff.

The amount of grown adults we meet who will only eat boneless skinless chicken breast or boneless pork chops because they have some aversion to eating off the bone blows our mind. Just as RA. She’ll tell you. There isn’t an animal raised for meat on this farm that doesn’t have bones.

For anyone worried about not being able to tell Sasa and Awi apart, Sasa went and cut her face 🤪 She’s doing fine and keeping it clean. It’s healing well, but gosh it sure makes knowing who is who from a distance easier.

Such a cool moment to witness as a family. There was a time in history when most children would have had the opportunity to see the birth of an animal first hand, not through a YouTube video. And now stats say that only around 2% of Americans farm. That doesn’t account for homesteaders. And that number does account for large industrial farms where families may not live on the property or anywhere close. That also includes crop and livestock. So obviously it would be hard to nail down an exact number of those who have opportunities like we did the other night, but I don’t have to know the exact number to know this was pretty damn special.

We had our annual puppy party today! Unfortunately it got postponed to this weekend because of the weather last weekend, but we had a beautiful day and sill an awesome turnout!

This was our first family reunion without the one who started it all. We definitely missed seeing Cheyenne running with her pups, but it’s incredible to see the community that these pups have brought together and the joy they share with each of their families!

The chicks are just freeloaders until 18-21 weeks old when all of a sudden they think they run the place!

In all honesty it is super exciting, regardless of the market for eggs, that these chicks we started in the fall, who came out to pasture as pullets, are now productive hens.

Saturday evening Bowers Farm was surprised with an incredible honor.

First, a little backstory. Growing up, I remember attending WoodmenLife dinners almost every month with my Nanny and Papa, especially the Annual Family Dinner and Awards every year.

We were personally invited to the annual dinner this year by a loving friend of my grandparents, and now our friend. We have seen her several times over the past few months and we have joked with RA about taking up my old spot as the entertainer. We wanted RA to know what WoodmenLife was so we accepted the invitation. The dinner on Saturday was filled with people who have known me my entire life, friends and community members I have grown up with around me.

During the awards and celebration portion of the event an Environmental Award was announced and then they said “The family is actually here tonight, and we would like for the Bowers Family to come forward.” As the shock was wearing away and we began to walk forward I was simply blown away! To be recognized was an honor in and of itself. To be recognized by this group was so meaningful. I spoke a brief moment about what we do at Bowers Farm and the ways we try to teach people about agriculture and what it takes to raise food. I shared about farm camp and how it’s grown. I was still in such shock I’m sure I didn’t fully capture what we do here or how important this call is to us all, but I hope our passion shines through.

Then when we were heading back to our seat I realized the quote on the plaque, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,” seeing this was almost too much. This is a quote we reference often and try to live by. We hope to not only leave this land better than we found it, but to welcome and educate others along the way, because in our eyes it’s just silly not to share it! And maybe, just maybe, once they leave this place they are filled with a desire to care for creation themselves as consumers, as advocates, as those who care about this earth and nature we all share together.

Thank you so much WoodmenLife for this incredible honor. We are humbled and even more inspired to continue doing this work!

Too often their reaction is something like “I went into this work” or “I moved out here” so that I wouldn’t have to deal with or be around people. Sure, but that seems shortsighted to us. There are LOTS of reasons we welcome people here, but these are our top three:

Time to get outside girls! The heater is off and our brooder full of chicks is daily going outside to get acclimated. They’ll be 5 weeks old next Monday and ready to start finding new homes as 5 week old pullets.

At 5 weeks they’re fully feathered and ready to be outside full time. This week they’re going out in the morning and back inside for the evening. These first few times shooing them out is a big chore but give it another day or two and they’ll be at the door ready for it to open.

It’s delivery week! So make sure to place your order by Wednesday at 6pm! Maybe you’re wanting something special to cook for Valentine’s Day or maybe a selection of cuts of meat is the perfect gift for the one who has everything!

We will be interviewing some more potential staff for Summer Camp and don’t forget REGISTRATION IS OPEN! We had a record number of registrations on opening night, over 50% of the slots were filled and we had increased our spaces by over 50 this year. We do have a few spaces available each week so invite the free range farm kiddos in your life!

We had a wonderful family staying in our AirBnb this past weekend who were visiting for lacrosse matches at Newberry College. We’ll be flipping the space this week for returning guests coming in this weekend!

Of course we’ll be doing chores, bottle feeding Bella 🤪, and preparing for piglets coming soon! We hope you all have a wonderful week and don’t forget to place your delivery orders and register for camp!

It was such a blast to be a host site for the South Carolina Agritourism Association annual conference. We were one of 6 farm visits over the 3 day conference two weekends ago.

We have been members of the association for many years and attending the annual conference for probably just as many. One of the greatest gifts of the tour every year is the variety of farms and agritourism operations that are happening across the state. We are all doing things a little differently and have our own spin on how we open up our spaces and share agriculture with others.

Last night Sarah and I were recognized as co-recipients of the Newberry County Young Professionals’ 4 Under 40 at the Newberry County Chamber’s Annual Meeting!

It was and is an absolute honor to be nominated and selected. Sarah got the call in December from our dear friend and former President of NYP, Mary Alex. When Sarah called and told me I was at a loss for words. “Why did they pick us?” I asked her. “Because people see value in the work we do,” Sarah responded.

If you’ve been following Bowers Farm for any length of time, you know that in our recent past there has been pushback to our efforts to welcome people to our farm, to showcase and educate others on where their food comes from all while highlighting the beauty of our town and county and honoring this beautiful land we’ve been entrusted to care for. And in the most life-giving way our desire to welcome and educate are two of the major reasons for our nomination and selection. This work isn’t easy - farming, entrepreneurship, going against the norm, and creating a path when it seems there isn’t one to follow - but gosh it’s worth it!

If you’ve been following Bowers Farm for any length of time, you know that in our recent past there has been pushback to our efforts to welcome people to our farm, to showcase and educate others on where their food comes from all while highlighting the beauty of our town and county and honoring this beautiful land we’ve been entrusted to care for. And in the most life-giving way our desire to welcome and educate are two of the major reasons for our nomination and selection. This work isn’t easy - farming, entrepreneurship, going against the norm, and creating a path when it seems there isn’t one to follow - but gosh it’s worth it!
