A speaker at a conference we attended many years ago said “The way to truly honor the life of an animal that is raised for meat is: a good life, a good death, a good butcher, and a good cook.”

And I think we would add to that - a deep gratitude for the animal and those who gather to be nourished by it.

This pig was not only born and raised on our farm, but during its life it was part of a system that strives to leave the land better than it was the day before.

To have raised something that is then shared in community and nourishes those who gather is a pretty amazing thing!

This is a month filled with Airbnb guests traveling to the area for weddings, looking for time away to reset before the holidays, and visiting family.

After farming for over 10 years and raising pigs for over 8 we experimented with making our own bacon this weekend for the first time!

Each pork belly was seasoned, aged, smoked, and then cut up and put away for us to enjoy.

In a time where people have little connection to their food and take for granted the work it takes for food to make it to their plate - it’s hard to put into words how incredible it is to have been part of this process since the point of breeding. We cared for the mother before and during pregnancy, observed in awe as she gave birth, watched the litter grow, and now we get to enjoy together and with our friends and family the gift the land and our stewarding has provided for us.

The good stuff.

We’re a business, we know that.
But we’re also a family.
Sometimes we get so deep in the business, selling, marketing side of things we forget why we started all of this in the first place.

We’re thankful for seasons of rest and resetting. Thankful for moments, like the morning sun peeking through over the laying hens, that slow us down. Thankful for clarity of new chapters and focus on what brings us the most joy while remaining true to who we are and why we do what we do.

The business side is ever evolving a changing.
The passion and heart for caring for creation and sharing it with others never wavers.

This, this slow morning view collecting eggs, this is the good stuff.

At least when you have to run around to get them back in the setting is gorgeous…unless it gets too late and you can’t see 😒

Pigs really are so tough to get back in. They may look big and slow, but they’re actually very quick.

Sure they could be raised in confinement on concrete floors and they wouldn’t get out, but I don’t know who thinks that’s a good idea. Do you know the story of the bacon on your BLT? Is it a story you feel good about? If the answer is no - you need to find a local farmer!
