After farming for over 10 years and raising pigs for over 8 we experimented with making our own bacon this weekend for the first time!

Each pork belly was seasoned, aged, smoked, and then cut up and put away for us to enjoy.

In a time where people have little connection to their food and take for granted the work it takes for food to make it to their plate - it’s hard to put into words how incredible it is to have been part of this process since the point of breeding. We cared for the mother before and during pregnancy, observed in awe as she gave birth, watched the litter grow, and now we get to enjoy together and with our friends and family the gift the land and our stewarding has provided for us.

What a gift!

Pigs really are so tough to get back in. They may look big and slow, but they’re actually very quick.

Sure they could be raised in confinement on concrete floors and they wouldn’t get out, but I don’t know who thinks that’s a good idea. Do you know the story of the bacon on your BLT? Is it a story you feel good about? If the answer is no - you need to find a local farmer!

A little before and after of our new picnic shelter we finished last month. All the lumber for this shelter came from Bowers Farm. It was sawed from the many trees that fell during Hurricane Helene.

They have been raised again with a new purpose.

During deliveries this past week, as we were walking back to the car, the customer kindly yelled from their doorstep, “Thank you for feeding our family!”

It almost caught us off guard. Absolutely that’s what we do. We raise the best food for our family and yours. It’s an honor. It’s a joy. It’s definitely hard work and in the heat of the summer we question our decision to do this…often. But it’s so rewarding!

Yet food is so readily accessible and available the gratitude for it is sometimes lacking. Often we don’t think about what it takes and who it takes to get food to our plates.

This shout meant so much! Supporting local agriculture means you see the face that raises your food - you buy from them on their farm, at the farmers market, or maybe it’s delivered to your doorstep by them. Knowing your farmer means you know a little more about where your food comes from. You can give thanks for them by name or, ya know, even in person with a friendly, “Thank you for feeding our family!” Tell them! It will mean so much!

We closed out Farm Camp 2025 yesterday.
Last week. Best week. Last day. BEST DAY!
It’s been an incredible summer and this last week may have been hot but so amazing!
It was awesome to celebrate another 5 year camper this week as well who told her mom on the way home, “I got my five year pin today and I can’t wait until I get my ten year pin.”

The dream of Farm Camp may have started as a way to teach children about farming and agriculture but it has become so much bigger than that! It’s a place where kids get to be outside and enjoy nature, it’s a place where all kids are welcome

Now for some rest, but if you know us you know our brains are already churning with ideas for year 6!

Today our campers got to meet the Flerd, our flock of sheep and herd of cows that graze together!

They also got to walk through the food forest and snack on some blueberries and wild blackberries.

Day 2. Week 4. The Garden!
Today we learned about the garden, what is going on above the soil and below! We use our garden as a launching point to talk about crop farmers and to remind the campers that even if you can’t have a chicken where you live, EVERYONE can’t plant a flower, herb, or vegetable plant!

Every kiddo is now the proud caretaker of three composting worms in their very own worm farm too!

In all the chaos of feeding animals, fixing the well, putting together orders, planning for the week, getting set for camp, we almost miss this.

The reason we do what we do. The beauty of creation. The grounding of this peace. The power of this land and what it can provide for us when we care for it, including sunsets to remind us of what’s most important.

Redfoot grows lots of vegetables throughout the year but today they brought an extra special one to share with our campers - sweet corn! Campers learned about each part of the corn, got to shuck a piece, and then enjoy it fresh. From Alex and Caitlin’s farm to ours, straight from the field, fresh as it gets!

This week we are Farming Through the Seasons and have visiting farmers sharing about what farming looks like for them to farm throughout the year.

We kicked off today with Megan and Hadley from Just A Farm Dairy. Our campers got to learn so much about dairy cows and the coolest part was them all making butter! Our all day campers even made ice-cream with some Just A Farm milk!
